Castledon Emperor Donfloss is the only UK cow to have produced over 200,000 kg in her lifetime. Sarah Liddle researched this remarkable cow and the impact her descendants are making today

4 EX91 LP150 2*. This 1979 born MMB Werrcroft Emperor daughter’s life spanned three decades and by February 2000 she had become the first, and so far only, UK animal to produce over 200 tonnes of milk. She was one of a number of high yielding animals from Norman and Tim Gotts high producing herd which was the first herd in the UK to achieve both a 10,000 kg and subsequently 11,000 kg average on 3x day milking. Between 1987 and 1994 they were the highest yielding herd in the country for all breeds and this period saw Donfloss in her prime.

Over the forty year period that the Gott family milked cows near Wickford in Essex, a total of eight EX and 15 VG animals were bred from a family which was in-situ when Norman Gott took over the farm in the 1960s. They were subsequently graded up in the British Holstein Society Supplementary Register in the late 1970’s with Emperor Donfloss 4 being a daughter of the first to be registered, Castledon Donfloss. Over the next three decades, we have frequently seen Donfloss family members command premium sale prices, perform well in the show ring and produce well in the parlour for a multitude of herds, though none has yet bettered the outstanding production of Emperor Donfloss 4. In 1989 Donfloss 4 was winner of the BHS Newby Trophy, recognising her tremendous production capabilities a whole 11 years before she surpassed the 200 tonne mark. Presented by Eric and Stella Birchall, the award went to any BHS-registered cow that had produced three consecutive lactations averaging at least 760 kg combined fat and protein and also had an average

calving interval of under 385 days. That year Donfloss won with the Newby Award with ease as she racked up 1585 points, being a whole 207 points ahead of her nearest rival. At that stage Donfloss 4 had a three lactation average between her sixth and eighth lactations of 14,125 kg with 1005 kg CFP and a mere 354 day calving interval, some standard to be setting albeit it on three times a day milking. In fact for her first eight lactations, which totalled 96 tonnes of milk, she averaged 12,010 kg in 302 days at 3.9% fat with a 362 day calving interval. After first calving at 25 months of age, she had a steady first lactation of 7350 kg before milking into her fifteenth lactation, while her highest lactation was her tenth when she knocked out 15,566 kg at 4.63% fat and 3.41% protein in 305 days. During that time she also bred eight daughters by Holstein sires of the era such as Locuslane Supreme, Meadow Bridge Falcon, Flemingale Roland, Inspiration, Mandingo and Warden. Her only VG daughter was Castledon Supreme Donfloss 7 VG85 by Locuslane Supreme but she was awarded two Brood Cow stars for her breeding capabilities. Donfloss 7 VG85 bred another high achiever in the LP100 VG85 A Kingstead Valiant Tab daughter Tab Donfloss 20, born in 1990. It was in turn her EX90 Jed daughter, Jed Donfloss, who is dam of Wardle Stormatic Donfloss that has been one of Ian Williamson’s high achievers over recent years. Wardle Stormatic Donfloss EX91- 2E is now owned by Peter Waring at Winton after he bought her for 2600gns at the Wardle sale last year. Stormatic Donfloss has
