BREEDERS ACHIEVEMENTS Drointon Charles Dawn Red 2 EX90 LP100

Bred and owned by Drointon Holsteins

Drointon Charles Dawn Red 2 EX90 has given 100,467 kg in eight lactations. She recently calved her ninth calf and is currently giving 50 litres a day. Charles Dawn originates from the Dawn family at Huxley, which was where we purchased her mother, who was an Aerostar daughter out of an EX Tora Matt Lancer. Charles Dawn was our very first homebred VG two-year- old and one that we would have liked to have shown. Unfortunately, she had very different ideas on this subject, and after many attempts to get her walking on the halter, we eventually had to admit defeat!

Drointon Raven Edna 4 EX93-5E LP100 SP Bred and owned by Drointon Holsteins

Drointon Raven Edna 4 EX93-5E has given 103,309 kg in seven lactations and is due to Kartoon with her eighth calf in mid July. A consistent producer, her peak cam in her seventh lactation when she produced 14,315 kg in 305 days at 4.31% fat and 3.2% protein. Raven Edna is a daughter of Salem Star Edna EX94-6E LP120 7*, and has herself bred one EX and one VG daughter. Her EX daughter is the 70 tonne producer Drointon Principal Edna EX92-2E who has two bulls in the Cogent stud, Drointon Electrify and Drointon Energy.

Bigbridge Jolt Penny EX92-3E LP100 SP Bred by S W Hutchinson & Son and owned by R J V & A R J Kelso

On 5 May, we received notification that tenth calver Penny had reached the 100 tonne milestone. Sired by Second-Look Jolt, classified EX92-3E and a seventh generation VG or EX, she was purchased as a seven-month-old calf at the Bigbridge dispersal sale in 1998 for 780gns. She was the one my brother and I, aged 13 and 21 at the time, had picked out for Dad to buy. A late developer, Penny has passed this trait down through the subsequent generations. Two other notable Penny traits are her ‘never say die’ attitude and her frame and capacity. It is this power and robustness that at one stage saw five generations of Pennys on the farm at the same time. A very fertile cow, her best 305 day record was her ninth lactation when she produced 11,459 kg at 4.29% fat and 3.0% protein. At present her best offspring seem to contain Prelude blood, with the most promising of all being an in-calf heifer by Shottle via a VG87-2yr V Farao great grand daughter of Penny who is projected just short of 14,000 kg as a second calver (2x) and is in-calf to Aftershock. Penny is a cow we have been honoured to have the chance to work with. She has no plans to retire just yet, being confirmed back in-calf again to Shottle.
