BREEDERS ACHIEVEMENTS Hundred tonners at Hawksmoor

Rob Clare of the Hawksmoor herd in Shropshire recently sent in lactation certificates for an amazing nine cows bred in his herd that have produced 100 tonnes. Here is what he had to say about his record breaking ladies….

(All cows mentioned have the Hawksmoor prefix)

One of the cows, Seamist 11 EX90- 2E, is actually the third consecutive generation to have reached this landmark. I’m also sending you the certificate for her dam Seamist 7 EX92-3E, who actually did 122 tonnes whilst her dam was Seamist 5 VG86, who did most of her yield in Hugh Kennedy’s herd in Scotland having been sold in our 1991 Reduction Sale. We sadly don’t have too many Seamists in the herd as they seem to prefer bull calves, but I do have a fresh heifer from Seamist 11 by Hawksmoor Roman, which looks very promising, plus an ET heifer by Magor Bolivia Allen. However, being at the latter end of my dairying career, I feel that I may well have retired before either of these two reaches the level of production of their predecessors. Four of the nine; Abbess 18 VG89, Dot 53 EX90-2E, Topee 20 EX92-3E and Rosemary 149 EX90, are interestingly all sired by Shoremar Maverick, a bull which did a marvellous job in this herd. I’m very grateful to Fred Williams of Semen World for this, as he sent Maverick here on lay-off. In contrast to the Seamists, these four are all from established families and have plenty of relatives either in the herd or in the pipeline. Chancery 51 EX93-3E reached 118 tonnes but sadly we lost her after she calved her ninth calf last autumn. She was by Robthom Integrity and took a little bit of time to become EX because of her leg set and bone quality, but she had the most fantastic udder which at the end was still really high, wide and well attached. She leaves a really nice second calf daughter, Chancery 65 VG85 by Roylane Jordan, plus a very pleasing in calf grand daughter, Chancery 66 by Hawksmoor Roman. I bought into the Chancery family, which
