RICHAVEN OPEN DAY R

ichard and Dawn Bown held an Open Day and Sale in early July to show- case their Richaven herd and to celebrate their achievement in winning the Premier Pedigree Herd title last year. Over 350 breeders and friends took the op- portunity to visit this outstanding 85-strong herd, which currently consists of VG or EX animals only, fulfilling a dream Richard has had since he founded Richaven Hol- steins in 1993. This statistic includes 17 heifers in milk averaging 86.3 points whilst the cows average 90.4, giving the herd an overall average of 89.5 points. Richard has acquired some very deep-pedigreed cow families since 1993 and has become synonymous with names such as Adrienne, Bud, Biddy, Dellia, Fransci, Ghost, Kay, Katie, Mahala, Papoose, Roxy and Squaw. In addition to inspecting members of these great families, the Open Day consisted of the chance to visit a number of trade stands, a tasty free hog roast lunch and a competition to judge the best three cows in the milking group, with master judge auctioneer Michael Taaffe. The senior winner was John Evans of Maesyrafon, while Max Davies (Davlea) was the junior winner. Richard’s breeding policy is based on breeding

tall, wide chested, deep framed, robust, feminine cows with superb udders and great legs & feet, and these traits are plain to see. It is his belief that by focusing on type, the rest follows and this is borne out by the herd’s average production of 10,648 kg at 4.41% fat and 3.19% protein (SCC 129). A Richaven cow is not considered old until she has reached at least her fifth lactation and this group average almost 12,000 kg. 2009 was the first time Richard had entered the national competition as he was spurred on by the Centenary celebrations. Representing the Midland region, the Richaven cattle impressed Premier Pedigree judge Mark Logan (Clandeboye) to such an extent that the herd was awarded the title ahead of Hilltara in Reserve and Honourable Mention Oakroyal. A full feature on Richaven was published in the December 2009 issue of The Journal (pages 26-31). An interesting feature of the day was the ‘Seeing is Believing Sale’ of 16 heifers bred from the heart of the herd. A good crowd stayed on to witness a lively sale conducted by Michael Taaffe, with two lots selling for a top price of 5,400gns. First to achieve this was Richaven Shottle Adrienne, a very stylish August 2009 Picston Shottle daughter. Her dam is Richaven Goldwyn Adrienne VG88-3yr who was third in her class at this year’s National All Breeds Show. Designer Holsteins from Essex were the purchasers. Augustin Celis of La Ponderosa Farm in Spain continued to acquire some of the smartest young heifers in the UK with his purchase of Richaven Goldwyn Squaw 3, a beautiful July 2009
