8 July 17 - Aug. 6, 2010 City Clerk Marla Paddock

As local election season kicks off with early voting at the end of this month, staff in the Chandler City Clerk’s Offi ce plays an important role in overseeing the process. From helping prospective Council candidates fi le their bids for public offi ce to supplying voter information, the City Clerk’s Offi ce is the hub of election activity.

City Clerk Marla Paddock and her staff of fi ve prep for the upcoming City elections by encouraging voter registration, assisting with voter education and helping those who are running for offi ce navigate through the process. For candidates wanting to run for the offi ce of Mayor or Councilmember, his or her fi rst stop would be at the City Clerk’s Offi ce. Staff ensures that campaign fi ling requirements are met, campaign fi nance reports are fi led and candidates are prepared for the possibility of being voted into offi ce. Early voting has been a popular way for residents to exercise their voting privileges. Paddock said about a third of Chandler’s registered voters are signed up under the Permanent Early Voting List (PEVL). Paddock emphasizes that since the elections for the non-partisan City candidates are now combined with the partisan countywide primaries, the PEVL voters who are registered as “independent” or “party not designated” will not automatically receive an early ballot. Those voters must ask for a “city-only” ballot or

“It is very important for all voters to be aware of this and participate in the Aug. 24 Primary Election,” Paddock says. “City Council candidates have the ability to be elected at the Primary Election if they receive a majority of the votes cast.”

The City’s 2010 Primary Election is set for Tue., Aug. 24. After the Primary, the Clerk’s Offi ce will prepare for the City’s General Election, scheduled on Nov. 2. To register to vote, a resident may do so online at www.servicearizona.com, or in person at the City Clerk’s offi ce. The last day to register is July 26, and early ballots will be available July 29. The last day to request early ballot by mail is August 13, and the last day to vote early in person is August 20. For those voters going to the polls on election day, sample ballots will be mailed to each household containing a registered voter prior to the election. The specifi c polling location for the voter is indicated on the publicity pamphlet. The voter may verify their polling location at www.recorder.maricopa.gov/ pollingplace/pollingplace.aspx.

In addition to overseeing municipal elections, the Clerk’s Offi ce has a key role in preparing agendas and minutes for City Council meetings, archiving documents for official records retention and conducting recruitments for vacancies on Chandler’s various boards and commissions and is a passport acceptance offi ce.
