Youth CHS girls take top Nike track honors

by Dave Devine, managing editor, ESPN Used with permission

Chandler High Coach Eric Richardson, at the reigns of the Chandler girls track team, had a crisis of uncertainty as he watched his athletes at the inaugural Nike Track Nationals recently in Beaverton, OR. “Our state meet was so long ago,” Richardson says. “It was the middle of May, so trying to keep them focused, trying to keep them moving, trying to keep them in shape, trying not to kill them … it’s really, really tough. We didn’t do as well as we wanted on the track … but we came through on the fi eld.” To say the Chandler girls “came through” in the

fi eld would be an understatement. Athletes swept the fi eld events, winning the discus, pole vault, high jump, long jump and shot put in turn, propelling the team to the top of the podium with 7721.65 points. The team didn’t know the championship was secure until the fi nal event was completed.

WINNERS: Members of the Chandler High School track team take first place at the recent Nike Track Nationals.

The Chandler girls led by nearly 500 points heading into the concluding mile, but had no one slated to race. CHS had to sit tight and hope their 7721.65 held up against the onslaught of teams with athletes in the race. It did. After the team’s big victory, Coach Richardson is considering renaming his

team, or at least rearranging a few words on the team sweatshirts.

“My throws coach always says, ‘It’s fi eld and track,’” Richardson chuckled as his team celebrated in the background, “and I always have to push him out of the way and say ‘It’s track and fi eld.’ But I stand corrected today. It is fi eld and track, and we’re happy with it.” With a winner in every fi eld event contested, it’s hard to argue the point. Among the standouts for Chandler were Haley Bowser, winning the pole vault at 3.33m/11-0, and Cadija Harris, leaping 1.67/5-05.75 to win the high jump. Jasmine Todd was the biggest point scorer, grabbing 934.78 with a third place fi nish in the 100 and 922.73 with a win in the long jump. Todd spanned 5.72m/18-09.25 (+1.1) on her fi rst leap of the competition.

But it was national javelin leader Hannah Carson who took care of business in the throws, securing

major points with her 12.90m/42-04.00 shot put victory and 40.34m/132-0 discus win.

“We won all the fi eld events,” Carson noted with disarming simplicity, “so we did what we had to do. Usually people don’t see the fi eld [events] that much, but that’s where we pulled it out.”
