To collect necessary provisions for students in local schools, SanTan Sun area businesses and organizations have initiated school supply drives.


In general, needs include tissues, hand sanitizer, pencils, pencil sharpeners, erasers, rulers, construction paper, blunt tip scissors, glue sticks, liquid school glue, crayons, colored markers, colored pencils, water color paints, pens, spiral bound notebooks, loose leaf paper, 3-ring binders, index cards, colored folders with pockets inside, backpacks and more. Following is a list of organizations accepting donations. To obtain a specifi c or detailed list of desired items, contact the entities sponsoring the drives.

In addition to school supplies, CCCC seeks donations to help pay for school uniforms for low income children. Those interested in helping should contact the center.


Fulton Homes “SOS” July 19 through Aug. 2

Operation Homefront Runs through August

The fourth annual Back-to-School Brigade program collects new school supplies for military families with school-age children. Drop donations off at Valley Cobblestone Auto Spas. Residents can sponsor a child’s backpack for $35 by visiting www. operationhomefront.net/az and clicking on “Donate Now!” The nonprofit organization hopes to distribute more than 5,000 backpacks filled with educational supplies statewide.

Free class, open house at Great Play Kids can try out a free class during open house


week at Great Play of Chandler, a new gym for children. Sessions are held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tue., Aug. 3 through Sat., Aug. 7 at their location on the southeast corner of Ray Road and the Loop 101 freeway.


“Great Play features fantastic coaches, an amazing Interactive Arena, and innovative curriculum that makes it fun for kids to develop motor skills, sports skills, fi tness, and coordination,” says Richard Iwanski of Great Play. “Great Play is providing a fantastic space for children to get active and stay fi t, and we want to introduce ourselves to the community.”


The Back-to-School Open House Week gives children ages 6 months to 12 years a chance to fi nd out which class is right for them.


Great Play offers games and programs for of locomotor skills, such as walking, running, jumping and hopping, to stability skills for balance, tumbling and dodging and manipulative skills for throwing, kicking and catching and prepare children for sports skill classes. They also offer birthday parties, camps and clinics and private lessons. Great Play of Chandler is located at 2855 W. Ray Rd., Suite 9.
