44 July 17 - Aug. 6, 2010 by Joan Westlake La Fonda Mexican restaurant brings a bit more

fi esta to Chandler by offering its happy hour specials from 3 to 7 p.m. every day of the week. Patrons can enjoy $2 beers and $3.25 house Margaritas along with a selection of half-priced appetizers including quesadillas, bean dip, queso dip and guacamole. Combine an appetizer with the cantina’s warm, fresh chips and salsa for an affordable party at a table or the small bar in the back of the café. Also new to the restaurant, says owner Angela Cota, are some light, healthy items. Six dinners were added featuring whole wheat tortillas, whole beans instead of refried, low-fat sour cream, low- fat cheese and items cooked in olive oil, all made from scratch.

Cota is a granddaughter of La Fonda of Tempe’s founder, Eloise Franklin. Cota grew up working in the business, founded in the mid ‘60s, alongside her brothers and sister. Their parents, Ray and Janet, are part of the family business, too. After going to school for a restaurant hospitality degree 11 years ago, Cota married and moved to the Chandler area. This November marks six years since she and her husband opened La Fonda Chandler.

favorite is the chicken burrito fundido style with a sauce of cream cheese, sour cream, jalapenos and green chilies. A popular grilled dish is the tender and fl avorful sirloin carne asada sirloin steak ($10.75), which is marinated and served with beans, rice and a tortilla. There are a number of dishes for vegetarians including the vegetable fajitas.

Making it family friendly, La Fonda has a $3 menu featuring a selection of items such as taquitos, small nacho supreme, large quesadilla, taco, tostada or enchilada. For kids 10 and younger, a $4 meal includes beverage and choice of item including mac and queso with rice or mini taco, tostado and rice.

Lunch specials, served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays, start at $5.25 for red or green cheese enchiladas with red beans and rice.

NEW MENU: Angel and Angela Cota, owners of La Fonda Mexican restaurant in the Fiesta Plaza at Queen Creek and Alma School roads, have a new “lite” menu and happy hour offerings.

The staff is a part of the restaurant’s success, notes Cota. Most have been there from the beginning, bringing the friendly, neighborhood feel to the café that has always been a hallmark of La Fonda.

With the addition of a few of her own creations, such as the fi sh tacos, they still use the recipes that her grandmother learned from her Mexican mother. Most selections are fi ne for even the most gringo tastes, but the picante sauce and some of the dishes will also please those who want some spicy fi re in their food. Burros start at $3.75, tacos $3.25 and chimichangas $5.95.Cota says a Chandler
