Crime will be analyzed, sketched, discussed and written about at the upcoming Write Now detective and mystery writing conference sponsored by the Desert Sleuths from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sat., Aug. 14 at the Wrigley Mansion in Phoenix.


James O. Born, the award-winning author of the “Alex Duarte and Bill Tasker” series, is slated as the keynote speaker for the day-long conference. Born, a special agent with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, has investigated various kinds of crime, from the violent to the economic, and from the organized to the drug cartels. He’s also served as an advisor to crime writer Elmore Leonard. Hand writing analyst and author of the “Claudia


AZ Arts Write Now conference by Desert Sleuths


Rose” series, Sheila Lowe, will open the conference with her tales of testifying in criminal court cases and what mystery and crime writers need to know about graphology before incorporating it into their stories. Lowe will be followed by Dr. Erin Nelson, a renowned forensic and clinical psychologist who was part of a task force investigating the Baseline Killer case in Phoenix, and Robin Burcell, an FBI-trained forensic artist.


Also on hand at the conference will be Allen Kates, a professional editor and former Fox Films development executive will speak on getting a novel’s fi rst 10 pages on the page and will provide feedback to writers on an individual basis.


Local youth actors ‘Grease’ stage


Twenty-seven young thespians from Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, Tempe and other Valley cities take the stage in Valley Youth Theatre’s production of “Grease,” running Aug. 13 through 29 at the VTY’s theatre in downtown Phoenix.


The original production of “Grease” earned 12 Tony Award nominations and the Tony Award for Best Musical. Performance times are 7:30 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays, 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays. Tickets are $20 per person.

Barbara Peters, owner of the Poisoned Pen in Scottsdale, will discuss her work with the bookstore and as the editor-publisher of the Poisoned Pen Press. Guest of honor for the conference, Lisa Holstine, is a librarian for the City of Glendale, a blogger-critic, and a life-long lover of books.
