News from Borders Rugby TV by Stuart Cameron
No sooner has the rugby season ended than the pre-season training kicks in and with an earlier-than-normal start to the season predicted for the leagues this year (21st August) and a re-vamped league system, we can look forward to another feast of rugby. By the time you read this all the latest news on the local rugby season and fixtures should be in place, and on August 1st we will launch our brand new website which we are very excited about.
But let’s look back at the season just gone and tell you about the Borders Rugby Awards which took place in Kelso recently. Hawick were the big winners this year winning Team of the Year as well as one of their players, Bruce McNeil, being voted Player of the Season. Kevin Reid, their outgoing captain, won a special award for contribution to local rugby by Radio Borders, while Melrose, Gala, Gala YM, Hawick YM and Hawick Linden all won team awards for their achievements. Melrose’s Fraser Thomson scored more tries than any other Borders player while Jedforest’s Ewan Scott topped the table for scoring most points, while in the National League section Berwick’s Gareth Hill was the top try scorer and Hawick YM’s Gregor Welsh won the ‘Most Points’ award.
To cap a successful evening which raised money for grassroots rugby, Peebles walked off with £1000, Hawick landed £250 and Gala YM took away a substantial amount of kit to help the junior players.
