There are literallythousands of events taking place across South London and further afield this summer,from fetes and festivals, to concerts and camps. Here is aselection of some of those attractions to bring some fun to the summer.


■ GET BACK TO NATURE ESCAPE the city and wander through the tranquil habitats of the Natural History Museum’sWildlife Garden. Set in the museum’sgrounds, the


garden reveals arange of British low- land habitats, including woodland, meadow and pond, and demon- strates the potential for wildlife con- servation in the inner city. The garden is open every day from

■ FEAST ON THE BRIDGE FOR moremusic, food and dance than you can shake astick at, get down to Southwark Bridge on September 11. As part of the Mayor’sThames Festival –which runs along the entire South Bank –the bridge will be closed to traffic for the entireday and transformed into amagical wonder- land for food fans. Feast on the Bridge will showcase delicious delicacies from all over the world, from freshly baked bread to giant cakes and mayonnaise mixed right beforeyour eyes. for young visitors to enjoy,such as apple bobbing and pumpkin carving. ■ THE BIG LUNCH FANCY getting to know your neigh- bours better? Then organise aBig Lunch! This initiative aims to get as many people as possible to sit down in their own street and shareameal with their neighbours. In 2009, morethan 25 street and garden parties were held in Lewisham –one of the biggest turnouts of any borough in the UK. ABig Lunch can be anything from getting together with your immediate neighbours –inthe garden, or on the street –toorganising abig street party with food, bunting and music that quite literally stops the traffic. This year’snominated date for the

■ BUTTERFLY EXPLORERS PICK up your passport and set offon abutterfly expedition from the Natural


History Museum. Sail the world to explorediverse habitats and see the spectacular but- terflies that live in them. Observe their behaviour and spot the different stages of their life cycles. Then find out why some species areunder threat and discover what you might find flut- tering about in your own back garden. ■ GET IN THE MIX FESTIVAL-GOERS will be flocking to Burgess Park on August 14 for The Mix –acelebration of young people across Southwark. The free event will see some of the


borough’sbest young talent take to the stage, and whether you’reinto DJing, street dance, creative writing or sport, therewill be something here for you to do, thanks to anumber of ‘have ago’ sessions led by profes- sionals. Therewill be two stages at The Mix, including the Live ‘n’ Up stage, which will play host to Mercury Music prize winner Speech Debelle. The family-friendly festival will also

■ ACOSMIC ADVENTURE HAS your little one always got their head buried in abook? If the answer’syes, then sign them up for a summer reading challenge. The fun event, which is being run at


all libraries from July 19 until September 5, encourages youngsters to read six books over the summer in order to win some great prizes. This year’sevent is called Space


Hop and yep, you guessed it –the theme is outer space, so blast into your local library this summer and let your children expand their minds…


■ PLAY DETECTIVE YOUNG animal lovers will be keen to take part in aMammal Detective Day at Battersea Park. The event, which will be held in the


Children’sZoo on July 27, has been organised by the People’sTrust for Endangered Species. After being given aseries of hints


and clues, children will be invited to work out which furry culprit has stolen the hazelnut. The event costs £6 for children
