Safari,sogood at Longleat F

Travel By Jenny Green

AMILIES in need of agreat day out should look no further than Longleat.

The famous house and safari park,

in Wiltshire, is owned by the eccentric Marquess of Bath and has plenty to keep both big kids and little kids alike amused for hours. Youmight have seen Longleat on

BBC’sAnimal Park, but there’smuch moretothe attraction than just cuddly creatures –asIfound out last month. As well as getting up close to ani-

mals from the comfort of your own car, visitors can also check out the Elizabethan Longleat House, take a

picturesque train ride and get lost in acres of Capability Brown’sparkland. In fact, thereare morethan 10 dif-

ferent attractions to exploreat Longleat, so it’sadvisable to get to the park early. When we arrived, on asunny

Tuesday morning, we decided to beat the queues and head straight to the safari park. Icouldn’twait to come face to face

with the exotic animals, and although Ihad afew concerns about my car (horror stories abound over what cheeky monkeys can do), Ipushed all worries aside and drove up to the gate. We werehanded aCDtolisten to

as we progressed around the park, which told us all about the animals we would encounter, fromthe giraffes and zebras to the lions and wolves. We wereable to feed some friendly

fallow deer through the car windows, gaze in wonder as arhino crossed the road and gawp at some lovely lion cubs sunning themselves on arock. It was amazing. After about 90 minutes, we emerged unscathed from the park and left feeling thrilled and exhilarated. Thereare lots of rules to follow and certain cars –such as soft tops – aren’tallowed in, but if you’ve got a sturdy family vehicle and some excitable kids, the safari will be an experience you will remember forever. If you’rekeen to see morecute

creatures, go straight to Animal Adventurewhereyou can help to groom aguinea pig or weigh ator- toise. Atrip on the Longleat Railway is a

Passport Ticket, which allows once- only entry to each attraction and works out at £24 for adults, £17 for children aged three to 14 and £19 for senior citizens. Youcan tour the park on a‘pay as

must, as is aSafari Boat trip on Half Mile Lake. Here, you’ll get to see Gorilla Island

and, if you’relucky, some hippos, with the estate’snoisy sea lions in tow. Thereare also awhole range of attractions geared towards younger visitors, such as the Postman Pat Village, AdventureCastle and Old Joe’sMine. We explored Longleat with a

you go’ basis, but the Passport Ticket is the best –and cheapest –option, saving you morethan 50% on individ- ual entry prices. Plus, if you don’tmanage to get

round the whole park in one day,you can re-use your Passport Ticket until the end of the season so you don’t miss out on athing. For moreinformation about Longleat or to purchase discounted tickets online, visit www.longleat.co.uk
