Hudson Revisited for Historical Society
by Len Lathrop The Hudson Historical Society and guests received a treat last month when “Dion to Entertain You” was part of their monthly meeting. Viv and Ray Dion brought their unique and wonderful combination of storytelling and songs to “Alvirne,” the Hills House. Do you remember the Halloween
tradition of painting the cannon at Library Park? This was during the ‘50s in Hudson—back when new cars cost $1,520 in 1956 and the average home price was $7,000. Vivian told of her parents’ home on five acres of land across from the then-Connie’s
Restaurant, and traveling at 55 mph on Route 102 to go with her dad to the White Cross Store by the bridge. As Viv finished one story, Ray would sing a song that was popular in that time frame. Vivian would return after the song with more tales from Hudson, including Alvirne High (from which she was a 1964 graduate), where the then- principal Chester Steckevicz carried a three-foot yardstick around the school; stories of how friends shaped her life in the grand community called Hudson; and with almost any young person growing up here, her memory of Benson’s, the elephants “Baby

Students Create and Send Quilt to Haiti
submitted by Collette Deneault In response to the
massive earthquake that struck Haiti on January 12 of this year, students from Mrs. Troup’s fifth-grade class, along with the expertise of Mrs. Schibanoff, created the peace quilt shown. Initially, these squares were designed for a peace campaign project sponsored by the Nottingham West PTO and Guidance Department. Given that these two events coincided, the students elected to turn their singular squares into a community quilt to be sent to Haiti through the Red Cross.

Area pre-teens gathered at the Rodgers Memorial Library to create projects out of an all-purpose fix-it—duct tape
by Lynne Ober
Duct tape is the answer to many of life’s problems, and if you joined the 45 happy pre- teens at the George H. and Ella M. Rodgers Memorial Library, you, too, could have made duct-tape creations. Amy Friedman, Librarian, said that the boys were more creative with the tape as they tried to out-do themselves with new inventions to make.
See our website for Fall Classes! All of the participants got to choose their
favorite color of duct tape (in case you don’t know, duct tape isn’t just silver anymore. It has gone very colorful). Participants had a choice of several projects that came with instructions. Some made mouse pads, wallets, or sunglasses cases. Others created flowers with stems, and others made their own projects. Everyone was having a great time, with laughter and happy chatter filling the room. Snacks and drinks were provided.
