Merchants Bank/Rotary Twin State Classic Litchfield was well represented at the 30th annual

Merchants Bank/Rotary Twin State Classic last Saturday held at the University of Vermont. The annual tilt features the Vermont senior basketball all-stars versus their counterparts from the Granite State in both boys’ and girls’ basketball. This year’s New Hampshire boys’ squad boasted two local athletes: Scott St. Lawrence from Bishop Guertin and Shawn Henriquez from Campbell.

An impressive Vermont squad took advantage of their superior size to control the backboards en route to an 88-73 victory on Saturday. The hosts came out early behind the all-around play of game MVP Joe O’Shea (21 points, seven rebounds) and never looked back, building a 22-point halftime lead. This is the third straight win for Vermont in the series, which New Hampshire leads 18-12 overall. St. Lawrence, though saddled with foul trouble from the first minute of the contest, led New Hampshire on the glass with eight rebounds, while adding nine points. The senior was a second team all-state selection in Class L this season and as a captain, helped lead the Cardinals to the semifinals of the state tournament this year. He was selected as a Nashua Telegraph first team all-area player this year.

Lawrence will be attending Salve Regina University in the fall.

Henriquez made the most of limited playing time in the contest, sparking a Granite State comeback with a bucket, a blocked shot, and a rebound in a three-minute first half stint. A senior captain for the Cougars this year, Henriquez was a first team all-state selection in Class M and joined St. Lawrence on the Nashua Telegraph all-area first team. This season, he set Campbell single-game records for points (35 vs. Mascoma), three pointers (six vs. Mascoma), and assists (10 vs. Farmington). Henriquez was the first Campbell basketball player ever selected to play on the Rotary team. He will be attending Wentworth Institute in the fall to study mechanical engineering.

Local Athletes Help BG to Tennis Title LAWS & DEMERS PLLC

by Chris White This past season was one to remember for the Bishop Guertin (BG) girls’ tennis team. For the first time since 2005, BG won it all by taking home the Class L trophy after defeating Manchester Central at the Derryfield School in Manchester last month. Not only did the victory make the Cards the best in the state, it also capped an undefeated season for them. Julia Filler and Elizabeth Tousignant-

Miller, both Windham residents, were major contributors to BG’s storybook season. Filler, who recently completed her junior year, excelled as the team’s number-five singles player all spring. She contributed an 8-3 win over her opponent in the number- five singles match to help the Cards take the title over Central. Filler’s victory was one of four singles victories for BG that day, and the Cards went on to clinch the championship victory in the doubles round. Maybe even more important than a state title, both Filler and Tousignant-Miller excel in the classroom as well. Both girls are honor roll students, and they help fill out a BG roster that is loaded with academic talent. With Tousignant-
