Along with all the

international production crew I spoke to, Winkler, who first worked in South Africa about eight years ago, has really enjoyed being back, particularly at a special time like this, and working on this project. “The Gearhouse team are all great to work with and very helpful, enthusiastic about the challenges and with the real capacity to deliver to very high standards,” he commented.

LIGHTING With the shield/flag design, LD Patrick Woodroffe had to keep the lighting rig’s trim height as high as possible and ensure that nothing obscured it, which restricted his available lighting positions. His main challenge was

not the location of the show in S.A., as he commented, “The Gearhouse equipment and crew are amazing”, but

it was the straightforward task of making a large spectacular TV show look memorable and good for all those watching on TV and in the Orlando Stadium. “You can’t come up with

excuses like you didn’t have enough time or whatever. You simply have to deliver spot-on first time on a show like this,” Woodroffe clarified. The technical challenge

was to make it look big and epic on the wide shots, and get the medium shots and close-ups interesting and well-balanced. Load beams were

inserted into the roof by the Gearhouse Rigging crew led by Adrian Manley and the over-stage lighting trusses hung just below these to squeeze the maximum trim height out of the situation, so the trusses were above the top row of shields. The lighting kit was all picked from GSA’s stock,
