A word of caution There is a myth, perpetuated in the main by rogue contractors eager to get business, that planning consent is not required for timber decks. This may be true for very low level ‘patio’ decks but, if you live in a listed building, in a conservation area, a national park or the project you are planning is within 20 meters of a highway or is likely to affect the privacy of neighbours, then you may need to get consent. Always check fi rst with your local authority planning department before starting any building project.
