Perl and Python Programming

The Open Source movement has become known for its innovative and robust products, and two stars have been the Perl and Python programming languages. Often seen as rivals, both languages are used extensively on almost every major IT installation. Each has its advocates and both are under continual development by their respective communities, although it is not unusual to find people using both in different circumstances.

Perl is a well established language and is particularly popular with system administrators on Microsoft Windows and Unix. One of its strengths is the large range of add-on modules in the Comprehensive Perl Archive Network (CPAN). Python is rather younger, is popular with Java and LISP programmers, and also has a number of extension modules. Both languages are portable and run on a wide variety of operating systems, including Unix, Linux, and Microsoft Windows.
