A FREEHOLDER is hoping her wedding plans go with at least 10 hitches, as she bids to set a record for the most marriages in a pub in one day.
Rebecca White runs the the Full Moon in Morton, Nottinghamshire pub with her husband Will. She is attempting to get 10 couples to tie the knot in Las Vegas-style ceremonies at the pub on October 10.
So far seven couples have booked to say their vows on the day – the 10th day of the 10th month of 2010 – and she is looking for three more to walk down the pub’s aisle.
A former licensee who has continued showing his commitment to the trade has been crowned the winner in an Everards competition. Patrick Thurlby from Bakewell beat 15 other finalists to win the Tiger Best Bitter Support Your Local Hero contest. Patrick, 73, impressed judges, who were looking for community champions, by running a host of events at his local – the Lathkil Hotel in Over Haddon near Bakewell, Derbyshire. He comperes quizzes, organises raffles and runs events such as whisky-tasting nights. Patrick said: ‘The support from the community was fantastic and I’m really grateful to every single person who took the time to vote.’ He picked up £1,000, which he has donated to the Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity and Ashgate Hospice.
News Briefs Doorstaff comply
The Security Industry Authority (SIA) has reported a 98 per cent compliance rate among doorstaff following inspections in Leeds, Bristol and Kingston, South West London. Inspectors checked 202 staff in pubs, clubs and shops and found 199 with valid SIA badges.
Hobgoblin enjoys Obama effect
Brewers of Hobgoblin are having to work double shifts to cope with demand after it was sampled by Barack Obama. The US President was
given a crate of the beer as a gift from Prime Minister David Cameron. The beer is brewed by Marston’s in his Witney constituency. Wychwood’s head brewer, Jeff
Drew, said: “Orders have gone through the roof.”
Constellation’s booze education
Drinks company Constellation is doing its bit for alcohol education by producing a new guide to be used in the classroom. The pack, which includes information for parents, a website and video materials, is aimed at 11 to 16-year-olds. Teachers, governors and parents worked with the wine producer on the pack. And if all goes to plan the couple will set a record for the highest number of ceremonies taking place in a pub. Rebecca said: “We are keen to get to 10, so if there are any licensees out there who want to get married
maybe they can get in touch. “It has proved to be popular for people who have been together for a while and want to get married but do not necessarily want to be the centre of attention all day.”
The first wedding is booked for 12.15pm and the remainder will follow every half-hour.
After the ceremonies, guests will head to the bar, meaning the party – complete with Elvis impersonators and a casino at night – will get bigger and better as the day progresses. The Full Moon received its civil ceremony licence in January 2008 and in the past year alone has hosted 30 special days.
And the wedding trade has been a big boost to business. Rebecca said: “It is so important these days to try new ways to get people in the pub. The great thing about the weddings is you get lots of people in who have never been before, and after enjoying the day they are often keen to come
back.”
