The boy’s mother managed to pry the boy’s fingers apart...and Nick leaned over to lick his hand (she’s not supposed to lick and usually doesn’t.)She then laid down again to continue listening to the story.


Nick’s Calming Influence


Nick and her mom, Karan, were visiting a rehabili- tation hospital. They usually stop at the door of patients’ rooms and ask if they want a visit from the therapy dog. In this room Karan could see that the patient, a very old and frail woman, was extremely agitated...her body was tight and scrunched up, her hands clenched, and she would not allow any of the staff in the room to touch her. Nick and Karan began to move on, but one of the staff mem- bers, who knew of Nick, asked that Karan bring her in, thinking Nick might help.


Karan took Nick over to the woman’s wheel- chair. Nick looked at Karan questioningly, sensing the woman was angry but she was told to stay. She put her head on the edge of the chair and just sat there. Eventually the woman dropped her hand to Nick’s head and Nick didn’t move, just stayed where she was. After approximately 5 minutes, the woman started to relax and finally allowed the staff to help her.
