Supervisors – AR1, AR4 and AR5 Tose individuals who are currently working
as an asbestos supervisor who have sufficient knowledge, experience and training who can demonstrate the following through theory and practical assessment
w H&S issues and legislative requirements for the removal of asbestos. · Health and safety issues and requirements relating to the safe removal of asbestos. · Site safety procedures. · Emergency procedures. · Legislative requirements relating to asbestos removal.
w Control measures required for the removal of asbestos. · Purpose of respiratory protective equipment (RPE) and personal protective equipment (PPE). ·
Importance of correctly wearing and
using RPE and PPE. · Use of equipment for the safe and effective removal of asbestos. ·
w Carry out procedures for the safe removal of asbestos. · Operate designated vacuum cleaners to remove asbestos safely and effectively. · Carry out controlled techniques for the safe abatement of asbestos containing materials. · Comply with plans of work, Approved Codes of Practice and regulatory requirements.
w Carry out cleaning and decontamination procedures. · Perform cleaning procedures for asbestos removal equipment and non-disposable personal protective equipment. · Clean areas following asbestos removal and in the event of an emergency. · Perform personal decontamination procedures. · Comply with plans of work, Approved Codes of Practice and regulatory requirements.
Individual’s role and responsibilities
on site in relation to work colleagues and supervisors.
w Prepare to carry out asbestos removal procedures. · Daily checks of Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE). · Identify, wear and use Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in line with workplace and H&S requirements.
w Decontamination requirements. · Procedures for the use of decontamination units. · Importance of decontamination procedures.
w Set up enclosures for the safe removal of asbestos. · Construct enclosures on a timber framework. · Construct airlocks and baglocks. · Position and seal negative pressure unit (NPU) to enclosure. · Dismantle enclosures, airlocks and baglocks. · Comply with plans of work, Approved Codes of Practice and regulatory requirements.
w Carry out procedures for the packaging and disposal of asbestos waste. · Handle and package asbestos waste in accordance with regulatory requirements.
Supervisor on site assessment Te supervisor qualification will require the
following: w A full ARCA audit will be carried out as
part of the Supervisors qualification. In order to pass the qualification supervisors must also pass the site audit. Te site audit must meet all the existing requirements of the Site Audit Accreditation Scheme (SAAS) in terms of site suitability plus it shall be a minimum of 3 consecutive days work.
w Te dual evidence will be collected via: · Witnessing the supervisor at work · Asking additional oral questioning to clarify the supervisors understanding. · Recording evidence from site diaries, plans of work and any other documentation onsite. · It is important that a supervisor is able to prove that key items are recorded in his/her site diary to show to the assessor/auditor. Evidence that is expected to be recorded in the site diary should contain at least some record of the following: · Plan of works are checked and verified before asbestos removal is started. · What checks are performed, that pressure gauges on NPUs are operational and show appropriate readings and what if any additional action is taken to remedy the problems.
Assessment duration
w Level 2 Award in Health and Safety for Asbestos Removal (Unit AR1)
· Teory – 45 mins · Practical – 1hr 30mins
w Level 2 Certificate in Asbestos Removal for Operatives (Units AR1, AR2 and AR3)
· Teory – 1 hr 55 mins · Practical – 10hrs 30mins
w Level 3 Certificate in Asbestos Removal for Supervisors (Units AR1, AR4 and AR5)
· Teory – 1hr 25mins · Practical – 8hrs 30mins
Te above times are a minimum and based
upon the time required for a suitably prepared experienced candidate. Additional time required for second and subsequent attempts, to achieve the pass mark, are not included.
Certificate validity Each certificate is valid for a 5 year period.
After which the operative/supervisor will have to undertake another assessment to regain certification to the appropriate level. Tis will be updated to reflect changes in legislation, industry codes of practice and normative documentation changes. ARCA will be running the qualifications from
July 1st at our Rayleigh Training Centre initially and they will then be introduced to our other training centres soon after.
