THE HEART OF THE MATTER – SAN DIEGO PRIDE

I know it’s been rough, but it’s okay to let yourself get excited. President Obama’s speeches are getting more to the point—our point, Pride season is finally making its way to our fun little hot spot and this economical pit is finally starting to spring some hope of recovery. Overall, things are looking up and there’s never been a more appropriate time to celebrate it as one. This year’s theme for San Diego LGBT Pride is One World, One Heart, One Pride—the principles of unity, harmony and compassion being used to overcome bigotry. Kind of like the Summer of Love for the 21st Century…only with less psychedelic substances and more frequent showers.

PARADE Actress Cloris Leachman and Global Human Rights Activist Stuart Milk will serve as

Grand Marshals in this year’s parade—which starts at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 17. As an accomplished stage and film actress, Cloris Leachman captured our hearts and attention most recently on Dancing with the Stars. She will soon hit the San Diego stage with, CLORIS! I’m F*ing Eighty-Four: A One-Woman Show. Now she serves as our Celebrity Grand Marshal. She’ll be joined by Global Human Rights Activist Stuart Milk, founder of the Harvey Milk Foundation—named after Stuart’s late uncle who pioneered a gay- rights movement more than 30 years ago and was assassinated while serving on San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors. Stuart Milk’s first public address as an “out” LGBT activ- ist took place in 1984, at Oberlin College, where he was joined by Richard Schmeiken, Academy Award-winning producer of The Times of Harvey Milk. Since then, he has given major keynote addresses at national and international congresses, public demonstra- tions, Pride parades and equality summits, giving rise along the way to the stories and lessons of his uncle’s brave political accomplishments. Last year, he accepted on his uncle’s behalf, the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama and the California Hall of Fame Medal from Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

12 RAGE monthly | JULY 2010 The parade will take its usual course along University Avenue through the heart of

Hillcrest. It begins at Normal Street, proceeds west to Sixth Avenue, then turns south toward Upas Street.

ENTERTAINMENT If that doesn’t get your motor purring, this year’s festival entertainment line-up sure

will. On Saturday night at 8:15 p.m. on the Cox Communications Main Stage, the incom- parable Eve brings her Grammy Award-winning buns to our grassy knoll overlooking the city and raps to our hearts’ content as we marvel at the multitalented maven. With a full bag of tricks including a new album , a planned fashion line, a budding film/produc- tion company and hot new film and TV credits on Whip It! and Glee respectively, it’s no wonder VH-1 is ready to take a closer look at this petite powerhouse with its Behind the Music documentary. Sunday brings us a double team of diversion, first with the ultimate symbol of wacky 1980s synthpop, Devo. The offbeat Akronites will blast Pride weekend to a close with a headline performance at 7:15 p.m. On their way back from performing at the Winter Olympics, Coachella music festival, David Letterman and Stephen Colbert, Devo is among the hottest acts we’ve seen in some time.
