MAC Shines at Regional Handball Tournament

AC handballers made a major impression on the 112 players in the Northwest regional handball tournament held at Club Green Meadows in Vancouver in early May.
Aaron Garner won the open singles and then teamed with Matt Steele to take the open doubles title. Jennifer Hinman won the women’s open doubles, with Kristen Steele taking second. The two met again in the doubles fi nal, with Steele and partner prevailing this time for the open doubles crown.
Rich Berger and his partner, along with Bob Herrera and his partner, stayed alive in the open doubles into the semi-fi nals. Charles Dean and his partner toughed it out to a win in A doubles. Dean also teamed up with his son, Austin Biddle, to win C doubles.

Ed Grossenbacher continued his march through multiple age groupings with a dominating win in the 70 singles bracket. Another MAC stalwart, David Steinberg, prevailed for the win in a tough 50 singles bracket. Bill Flowers used his considerable experience and skills to snag second in the 60 singles group. Bob Evenson and Mike Steele took second in the 60B doubles group, taking the eventual winners into a tie breaker.
Other MAC players also turned in impressive performances. Heather Murbach, Steve Sharpe and Craig Trull all played well during the entire event.
Players’ tip
Anyone who is new to the game should focus on playing with a cupped, relaxed hand. This provides a little more protec- tion.
Warm up both hands in hot water for a minute before entering the court. While fi rst in the court, clap vigorously; this helps prepare the hands for contact with the ball. Finally, learn how to hit the ball with
a fi st in addition to the open hand. This distributes the contact to different areas of the hand.
