MEET THE BALLOON DIRECTOR Balloons Over Bend is happy to welcome back to the festival Darren Kling, who will
again serve as our balloon director. Kling has been a licensed balloon pilot since 1993 when he started a ballooning
company in Montana, giving rides and providing corporate advertising. Since 2000, Kling has operated a corporate ballooning outfit based in Portland, but is now opening a business to provide scenic rides here in Central Oregon through his company, Big Sky Balloon Company. As director, Kling coordinates the festival’s pilots and assists them in their takeoffs,
while also keeping a watchful eye on the weather and deciding if conditions are safe enough for the balloons to take flight. Having attended or directed each Balloons Over Bend since the inception of the event, Kling has come to love the festival and the flight opportunities it provides. “I really enjoy the flight area. It’s really unique with the Deschutes River canyon and
the challenging conditions that you can get in this area,” says Kling. “Also, the scenery is hard to beat.” Kling will be providing flights to guests during the festival in his “Artaloft” balloon. To book a flight, visit Kling’s website:
