Hudson~Litchfield News Pitcher and Catcher Clinic Held

by Lynne Ober A skills clinic for softball pitchers and

catchers was held this week at Darrah Pond in Litchfield. Working under the watchful eye of TJ Sheedy, who has held instructional clinics for 11 years, the pitchers and catchers of the 12U Blast All Star Team learned new and better mechanics, as well as learned how to throw those very confusing pitches that batters hate.

Coach Judy Brennen, who also is a board member as well as coaching both a rec and a travel team, was on hand to help. Brennen is in charge of player development, and it was obvious that she wanted her team to have fun, learn new skills, and build a good team environment. In addition to her other duties, this year, Brennen has taken on the chairmanship of the Litchfield Softball Tournament to be held from July 30 through August 1. “We have four different sessions scheduled for skill building,” said Brennen. “Today, we

have the pitchers and catchers.” Sheedy said that he was helping the girls

improve their mechanics when using the windmill delivery. “We are also going to be working on some new pitches and learning how to throw some of that off-speed stuff.” Sheedy said the first step to building speed in the pitches was good mechanics. “Everyone wants to throw faster, and that is all based on good mechanics and using your legs, shoulders, and head.” The girls began the day by learning the correct balance for throwing and learning how to include their legs and shoulders when pitching. Sheedy demonstrated why a pitcher needed to have good rhythm in order to pitch effectively. Making the girls use an awkward foot and hand-out stance, he had them rock backwards, straighten their shoulders, and then power through onto their front foot as they released the ball.
