‘Attitudes have certainly
changed. Older churchgoers will remember the bad old days when, in order to be selected as a bishop, a gay man had to humiliate his partner by saying that the relationship was celibate!
‘Tey will also remember that the
watchwords which gained approval for gay relationships in the Church were ‘faithful’, ‘stable’ and ‘permanent’. No need for all that hypocrisy now! Te Church of England makes no more demands of gay couples than it does of heterosexuals. We have at last achieved an even playing field, if I can put it that way.’
Te Reverend Ziegfeld, who was until recently the Vicar of St Sebastian’s, Earls Court, has gained a
considerable reputation as a relationship counsellor and fund-raiser. He is on the management executive of Including Catholicism. His new partner, Mark Atkins, is Member of Parliament for Cheltenham Central and the chairperson of a leading Aids charity. Tey have recently adopted two sons of Bangladeshi origin whom they will raise as Muslims.
Te Revd Joy Cherrypicker, Chair of Including Catholicism, said of the couple: ‘Tey are two of the nicest people you could hope to meet. I am sure they will make excellent parents. Philip’s elevation to the episcopate was long overdue.’
