Brock Jarrett Toledo Memorial Scholarship Winner

Luke Schuh, a Lemoore High School graduating senior, has been selected as the 2010 recipient of the Brock Jarrett Toledo Memorial Scholarship. Luke is the son of Bill and Diane Schuh of Lemoore. He will continue his education in the fall at Cornell University, majoring in Environmental Engineering.

Schuh is ranked number one in his senior class of 457 with a GPA of 4.57. He is a lifetime member of the California Schol- arship Federation, National Honor Roll Society and a Bank of America Achievement Award Winner. In addition to excel- lence in academics, Luke also played four years of football for Lemoore High and three years of varsity golf. He is currently president of the Lemoore FFA and has participated on the Ag Sales, Job Interview and Opening and Closing teams. He has also raised and shown dairy replacement heifers.

Outside of school, Luke has been a four-year member of the Kings County Junior Fair Board, a junior golf instructor and a part-time employee at the Lemoore Golf Course.

Tis scholarship was established by the Toledo Family in mem- ory of their son Brock who passed away in February of 1996. Brock was an active member of the California Junior Holstein Association. It will be awarded annually to a graduating senior who shares Brock’s enthusiasm for agriculture and love for the livestock and dairy industry.

Cortney Borba Memorial Awards

Cortney was born on June 6, 1987 and passed away on October 2, 1995. From day one she had no choice but to have a pas- sion for the Holstein Cow. She was the last of three children in the Borba family and from early on loved the dairy industry and Holstein Cow as much as her parents Frank and Carol and older siblings Frankie and Natalie. Cortney loved not only be- ing around the cows, but also to be around the people of the industry. She had a way of reeling them in with just a smile or short conversation. Cortney was known for her outgoing per- sonality and beautiful smile.

Not only was Cortney active within the CJHA, but she also played soccer and softball and loved to be out on the family dairy helping feed calves and perform daily chores. Her favorite chore was holding calves tails as they were pictured for registra- tion papers. She could not wait until she turned nine so she could join the 4-H club and show at the local and state fairs. It is a shame that she was taken before her ninth birthday, be- cause we know she would have been quite the competitor in the show ring.

After her death in 1995 the Borba Family sat down to find a way to honor Cortney from year to year. It was a unanimous deci- sion to establish and sponsor an award and scholarship in her memory to be presented each year at the California Holstein Convention and California State Holstein Show. Te Borba Family said, “Not only do we take pride in honoring Cortney, but we also enjoy helping the future of the California Holstein Association and dairy industry.”
