calf at the county fairs. Not only did I win showmanship the first time in the ring with her, she was also the special junior champion heifer. Abby is a cow that will always have a spe- cial place in my heart.

Two other special cows that were vital additions to my herd were Moreda-Laguna Aaron Esther (VG 88) and Moreda- Laguna Dante 5455 (VG 87). Dante (Danni) was the produc- tion winner at our county fair for several years, as well as be- ing named REJHA Reserve Grand Champion. In her lifetime, she produced over 150,000 lbs. Esther was Reserve Grand at several county fairs. I flushed her several times and her daughters are proving to be just as successful.

My involvement with my herd is extremely hands on. Al- though I do not live on the dairy, I am in charge of and re- sponsible for all management decisions and general care of my project. Springers are kept at my house until they calve. After they calve, they are sent over to my grandparents’ dairy to be milked. The calves are kept at my house.

Like I have already mentioned, my grandparents gave me my first heifer when I was eight years old. This helped to get my foot in the door into the dairy industry. The dairy industry has played a large role in helping me to become the person that I am today. Over the years of raising calves, showing cows, and competing in dairy bowl competitions, I have de- veloped a fondness and passion for the industry as a whole. This passion motivated me to become involved in the Cali- fornia and Redwood Empire Junior Holstein Association.

The many opportunities available through these organiza- tions are helping to develop tomorrow’s industry leaders. Activities such as the annual Cow Camp and REHA judg- ing clinics help to get juniors, the dairymen of tomorrow, involved in the industry. I am a past president of the REJHA and past vice president of the CJHA. I have competed in ev- erything from dairy bowl to the public speaking competi- tion at the national level. Possibly my proudest achievement so far is placing second nationally in the dairy jeopardy com- petition. The dedication and commitment put into these junior activities is extremely rewarding, opening many new opportunities.

I look towards my future in the dairy industry optimistically. Maybe I will even have a dairy bowl question written after me! I want to be remembered as someone who left a lasting impact on the dairy industry. With my future on the horizon, I can see that it will be filled with new experiences, friends that support me, family that loves me, and green fields filled with black and white cows.
