Senior Breeder of the Year As Presented by Doug Maddox

Jack Lerch and Larry Gerber – JLG Holsteins

Always great to work with, they are involved in a number of syndicates with good breeders. Two rising stars are Elie Gay and Sunburst-ET in the Merlot and Cabernet Syndicates.

It has been my privilege to present the Senior Breeder Award now for several years. It is our Association’s most prestigious achievement award. Tradition- ally, the winner of the Senior Breeder Award is selected by an anonymous committee. Te committee, this year, is not anonymous as I sent a ballot to all past award winners. In fact, there were 22 in all.

Tere are no specific requirements or applications as the winner should be known by all for contributions to the breed, state, local and national associa- tions, community service, and above all, a lifetime achievement of breeding and promoting Registered Holsteins.

Tis year’s winner fulfills all of those requirements and then some. However, they are somewhat different than past winners. Tey have bred a “Great” herd with State Black and White Show Grand Champions and bulls in A.I. and yet have never owned or operated a dairy farm. A “Great” ET was their foundation brood cow. Grand Champion at the 1990 California Holstein Show and foun- dation of a 6 generation “Excellent” family that also includes “JLG Grandslam,” the number one udder composite bull of the Holstein Breed when in A.I. ser- vice. Te “Great” cow family also includes JLG Tor Great, Excellent-90 with 32,000 pounds of milk and JLG Rubens Greatful-ET, Excellent-91 with 35,000 pounds of milk. Rubens Greatful completes 5 generations of Excellent cows. In addition, JLG Quality Greatful, Excellent-93 was 2003 Grand Champion at both the California State Holstein Show and the Western Spring National. Another cow family is the Caliet family headlined by JLG Tor Caliet, Excel- lent-92 with records over 30,000 pounds of milk. Tis is just a small sample of the Very Good and Excellent cows bred by JLG.

However, what separates Jack and Larry from past winners is their contribu- tions to all Holstein breeders in California. I was reading recently about quali- fications for a “MVP” in the NBA and the “number one” quality is that the in- dividuals ability to make everyone around them better. JLG has certainly done that for California Holstein Breeders. Established in 1975, JLG has housed and collected more than 10,000 bulls. JLG distribution of private and young sire semen has spawned several generations of California progeny test programs. To name just a few; Arlinda, Nor-Cal, Golden Genes, Glazeway, Gouveia Roest, Carl Vierra, and a number of individuals including almost all California Hol- stein Breeders. JLG ships semen and embryos all over the world to give Cali- fornia Breeders a presence and an opportunity in the international market.

Tink where the Holstein breed would be without this lineup of former all- time great sires, all collected at JLG.

In addition to the business of JLG Enterprises and JLG Holsteins, Jack and Larry perform a couple of services for California Holstein Breeders that are special. Jack takes those great pictures of bulls in collection at JLG and Larry has been the voice of the California State Holstein Show for more than twenty years.

It is my honor and privilege to present to you Jack Lerch and Larry Gerber. Owners of JLG Holsteins and this year’s recipient of the California Holstein Association Senior Breeder of the Year Award.
