Cleaning up of Polperro Harbour underway

Work on cleaning up water in and around Polperro Harbour has started as part of South West Water’s £2bn Clean Sweep project.

Millions of pounds will be spent constructing a sewage screening station at Scilly Cove as well as a 330-metre pumped long-sea outfall, which is expected to take more than a year to complete.

The work is the final phase of the Clean Sweep programme which has been modernising sewage treatment around the peninsula.

The construction of the screening station by contractors Dean and Dyball Civil Engineering will involve building a temporary steel platform in the sea off the cove and transporting building materials by sea from Par.

Because access for vehicles is so limited in the village of Polperro, no materials will be transported through the streets and the construction site will be serviced solely from the sea.

Councillor Armand Toms donated a grant to the group for the new equipment from his councillor’s allowance for community groups.

Graham Murphy, South West Water’s director of engineering, said: ‘South West Water has invested £2bn in the Clean Sweep programme, which has modernised

sewage treatment all around the peninsula, removing almost 250 crude outfalls and transforming the quality of the region’s bathing waters.

‘The scheme at Polperro is one of the final pieces of the jigsaw.’

Clerk of Lansallos Parish Council Barry Jolliff said: ‘It has been a long time coming.

‘Polperro has needed an updated sewage system for years now.

‘While the council accepts there will be some disruption for a short period it will have a good benefit in the mid and long term.’

Cornwall councillor for West Looe and Lansallos Edwina Hannaford said: ‘I am really pleased because we have been waiting so long.

‘We welcome the investment and we will be monitoring any disruption.

‘There are plans to build a temporary pier, which has potential to become a temporary tourist attraction.’

The scheme is expected to improve sea water quality and provide environmental protection to the area.
