Trojan Technologies: Building Water Confidence in a Changing Climate
Environmental stresses have shaped civilisations throughout time. However the challenges that we now face are enormous in their magnitude as we realise that much of the world’s population will be living in areas that will no longer suit the “new” climates — local populations will not have sustainable environments.
As the key resource, water must be managed wisely. This includes proper allocation, use and reuse of water resources.Water management will require selection of environmentally sustainable technologies, focused necessarily on efficacy and the minimisation of energy consumption.
All water treatment technologies require the use of energy, whether treating wastewater to clean it prior to discharge or reuse, or cleaning drinking water to potable standards.Water processing steps include disinfection of microbes and removal of toxic compounds. The application of ultraviolet light (UV) (UVC light at wavelengths shorter than sunlight) is an effective approach, and has the best CO2 footprint of all available technologies. From an environmental perspective, whether considering CO2
emissions or reductions in
disinfection/treatment by-products, chlorination has been superseded by treatment with UV. UV technologies meet or exceed requirements determined by the USEPA and other regulatory agencies worldwide.
Trojan is proud to be part of some excellent examples of the sustainable treatment of water all over the world today.
In the Mt. View Sanitary District,Martinez, California, an enterprising wastewater treatment plant operator elected to recycle wastewater instead of building a pipeline to pump the waste into the ocean. As chlorinated water damages the ecology, he removed chlorination from the wastewater treatment plant process, installed Trojan UV, and created a wetland on a piece of industrial wasteland (a contaminated site), which served as the discharge reservoir. The 135 acres of previously unusable land are now a beautiful marsh.
In Orange County, California, the application of UV with hydrogen peroxide as the last step in a treatment train (known as UV-oxidation), causes the destruction of toxic compounds in water, leading to the reuse of wastewater for groundwater recharge. This comes very close to direct potable reuse—also known as toilet-to-tap.
The technology initially developed for water stressed California has found further use around the globe. Parts of Australia have been experiencing severe droughts. In Brisbane, where current reservoirs are less than 20 per cent of normal, Trojan recently provided technologies that facilitate the safe, effective and responsible recycling of water.
By contrast, in the Netherlands, too much water causes different stresses. There the water source at Andjik is contaminated with agricultural runoff, requiring the removal of agricultural pesticides and herbicides prior to delivery to consumers. Using UV-oxidation (UV plus hydrogen peroxide) tailored to the task, whole suites of chemical compounds are destroyed and removed from the environment thanks to technology installed by Trojan. Further research on this technology shows that it also safely destroys endocrine disrupting compounds from pharmaceuticals and personal care products that have entered the water cycle.
Also in the Netherlands, the Berenplaat facility which supplies the city of Rotterdam with water has installed UV as a primary disinfectant instead of chlorine in order to reduce the production of dangerous disinfection by-products.
In New York City, where pristine waters from the Catskills need only disinfection to render them safe, the application of UV disinfection to both the wastewater treatment plants in the watershed of the Catskills and the drinking water treatment plants supplying the City will be undertaken by Trojan as we provide the best environmental technology available. With no disinfection by-products, the systems are cost effective, and have the smallest overall energy consumption of available technologies.
It is interesting to note that of the 5,800 of installations Trojan is proud to name, the great majority are responding not only to what is “right” in terms of providing good water with good technology, but they are responding to regulatory drivers imposed by governments.
Trojan is privileged to provide the world with clean water.
