qua Europa is an association of national trade bodies that represents the interests of the supply chain of the European water and wastewater industry at the European level. In 2005 it adopted a new constitution extending its industry coverage so that it has a broad industry-wide representational role for the European water and wastewater industry supply chain. British Water has had a
formative influence in its development, playing a key role through its provision of management and secretariat services.

Directive and proposals for the development of a European product “acceptance” scheme on which a multi-sectoral roundtable was recently held in Brussels.
The association’s electronic quarterly, Aqua Europa Newsletter, is now in its third year and monitors key EU policy developments and has also been developing its lobbying activities, as well as conducting successful interventions to oppose prospective regulations that threatened market access within the Single Market.
Countries already in membership include Austria, France, Germany (two associations), Italy, Spain, Switzerland, The Netherlands, United Kingdom (two associations) and the USA (as Associate members), representing in all nearly 1,500 companies. The outlook for membership is encouraging as interest is being shown from industry associations across the EU.
An extensive structure of Task Groups is in place, which is helping gradually to develop and expand the influence of the
association. Currently there are 13 active Task Groups monitoring CEN standards development, European Directive implementations and revisions as well as specific sub-sector concerns.
The association is improving its links with its primary audiences – the European Commission, Parliament and the CEN, and is for example already part of the consultation process for revision of the Drinking Water Directive, water re-cycling under the Urban Waste Water Treatment
Further evidence of its growing status is the partnership established in 2007 with the University of Witten, Germany, under the EU Asia-Invest II Programme, now nearing its term, having organised trade missions and seminars in China, Thailand, Vietnam and the UK. Its purpose has been to provide industrial SMEs in China, Vietnam and Thailand with access to expertise in small-scale wastewater treatment technology and best practice, as part of the EU assistance programme supporting improved environmental management.
Aqua Europa is continuing its collaboration with the University of Witten in connection with other EU- funded projects.
