INTERNATIONAL FORUM
The focus of the International Forum is to help members win business overseas. Support is tailored to members’ target market territories to ensure activities are delivered in the most efficient manner.
Networks
The International Forum is a network of members active or interested in international trade. It fosters relationships with organisations, companies and relevant government departments involved in trade overseas, including UK based organisations such as UKTI, BERR, FCO, and DfiD.
Members are currently able to attend meetings of the International Forum and Specialist Suppliers Group which are held twice a year. International Forum meetings provide attendees with market intelligence and the opportunity to network with potential business partners whilst the Specialist Suppliers Group is provided with cases studies on how to access overseas markets, sources of information and potential business contacts.
Whilst the International Forum meetings are geared towards consultants, contractors and operators the Specialist Suppliers Group is for manufacturers and equipment suppliers, service providers and small-and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
Other Activities
Members are alerted to business opportunities, general trading conditions, forthcoming events and news through the bi-monthly newsletter Cascade IT, are given the opportunity to take part in overseas visits sponsored by UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) and can sit in on meetings with visiting delegations. Members can also gain access to UKTI funding to take part in overseas exhibitions whether independently or within a British Water pavilion and take part in other market-specific events, such as conferences and seminars, which are organised throughout the year.
TECHNICAL FORUM
The role of the technical Forum is to coordinate all technical activities on behalf of members. This includes monitoring technical development and dialogue with legislators and regulators such as DWI and EA on technical issues etc. It acts as the portal for responses to consultations on technical issues, and coordinates inputs to standards and regulatory development. It also prepares Codes of Practice to encourage best practice.
Focus Groups
The work of the Forum is carried out by Focus Groups, each formed to deal with a particular technical issue, or range of issues. The Focus Groups currently operating are: Activities of the Groups include
• Package sewage treatment plant • Sustainable Drainage (SUDS) • Private water supplies • Eczema • Scale and corrosion • Swimming pool treatment • Product and process approvals • Wastewater Treatment, reuse and recycling
monitoring legislation, field trials and research, preparation of Codes of Practice, and development of competency criteria and training.
COMMERCIAL ACTIVITIES
In parallel to the main work of the three Forums, British Water organises a number of commercial activities that complement their work, and generate income to support prevailing subscription rates. These bring subjects to a wider audience in the water industry and include conferences and seminars, networking events such as receptions and luncheons, training courses and publications.
GOVERNANCE
British Water is governed by a Board of Directors drawn from the member companies, which represents the broadest possible cross section of the water industry supply chain. The directors’ backgrounds range from small start-up companies concentrating on bringing technology to market to well-known multi-national enterprises. The Vice Chairman has specific responsibility for the interests of small and medium enterprises
