2009 Conversations Series Agriculture in America


Twenty two million American workers produce, process, sell and trade the nation’s food and fiber - but only 4.6 million of those people live on farms. Thanks to modern techniques, America’s farmers are producing more food on fewer acres and providing consumers with affordable, high-quality food. This discussion focused on the scope, risk, possibilities and challenges in American agriculture today.


Ag Biotech and the Growth Potential


for our Workforce St. Louis is now home to more than 20,000 employees working at more than 400 ventures in the plant and life sciences. To Sustain St Louis’ biotech expansion, public/private partnerships and growth capital are key to attracting additional companies. The discussion covered the key steps in creating new jobs and the workforce to fill them as the dream of St. Louis as a world center for plant and life sciences takes hold.

At this event, the leaders of three important ‘St. Louis Success Stories’ discussed how a robust and diverse St. Louis brand will help strengthen our region overall.


Science in Education


According to a 2006 report by the National Academy of Sciences, the critical lack of technically trained people in the United States can be traced directly to poor K-12 mathematics and science instruction. Few factors are more important than this if the United States is to compete successfully in the 21st century. This event reviewed opportunities and challenges facing science education.
