On the evening of October 10, 2009, the Danforth Center was transformed into a wonderland as the Danforth Society celebrated its annual gala event, Plantasia. The event is in celebration and recognition of the Danforth Society members who make the real magic of the Center—its research— happen every day.
More than 200 guests enjoyed cocktails, an autumnal themed meal, and African drumming and dancing by the Spirit of Angela & Kumasi Nankama Aswad Kamberg. Colored streamers and confetti rained down on the revelers in the atrium as Danforth Center Friends Committee Chair Derek Rapp thanked everyone for their incredible support.
The evening’s ceremony began with remarks from Dr. William Danforth and Dr. Roger Beachy. Beachy and Danforth then recognized the recipients of the night’s awards.
Joseph E. Varner, considered one of the forefathers of modern plant biochemistry, was given the Distinguished Science award in honor of the groundbreaking plant science work he accomplished during his
esteemed career. Dr. Varner’s widow, Jane Burton, accepted the award on his behalf.

award for their dedication to the Center and the St. Louis region. With their commitment to public service and economic development, the Bahles serve as an inspiration to all those who endeavor to make a difference.
The Joseph E. Varner Distinguished Investigator, named in honor of Dr. Varner and sponsored generously by Danforth Center Trustee John F. McDonnell, recognized its first recipient, Center scientist Dr. Tom Smith. Dr. Smith has been a committed and critical member of the Center’s world-class scientific team since 2001.
A huge debt of gratitude is owed to all Danforth Society members for making both the Center and Plantasia come alive. The evening would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of the Plantasia Steering Committee and its Chairs Laura Eaker and Lisa Nouss. We hope to see everyone again in 2010!
