Our Mission:
Improve the human condition through plant science
FEED THE
HUNGRY AND IMPROVE HUMAN HEALTH
PRESERVE
AND RENEW OUR ENVIRONMENT
ENHANCE OUR REGION
AS A WORLD CENTER FOR PLANT SCIENCE
A Small Sampling of 2009 Highlights:
• Receiving the largest research award in the Center’s history: $15 million from the U.S. Department of Energy to create the Center for Advanced Biofuels Systems (see page 6).
• The grand opening of the BioResearch & Development Growth (BRDG) Park, a 110,000 square foot building on the Center’s campus (see page 7).
• The formation of the Global Harvest Alliance, a partnership with St. Louis Children’s Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine to help fight global childhood malnutrition (see page 13).
2009 found the Center poised to have a profound impact on the plant science world. Now beginning our second decade, the Center’s dream of improving human health around the world, protecting our environment and bettering our region is moving closer to reality. Dr. Roger Beachy, the Center’s founding president, noted that 2009 marked the moment the Center became “no longer a startup institution, but [one] in its early maturation stage.” Dr. Beachy’s departure to become the fi rst director of the brand new National Institute of Food & Agriculture in Washington D.C. underscores that the Center is gaining prominence on a national and international scale (learn more on page 4). Now is not a time for complacency. As Center Chairman Dr. William Danforth reminds us: “New opportunities for important service bring more work and more challenges than ever before. If you play in the major leagues, you have to work harder.” Our progress in 2009 serves as proof that we, with the help of our many Friends, are prepared for the arduous and ambitious road ahead.
