Finding the right course is key First of all, I’d like to start with a thank you!

It’s been eighteen months or so since we launched Pitchcare’s Training initiative and, in that time, I’ve been working with many Colleges and our network of Training Providers to enhance and improve the service we can offer to our members. Their support and cooperation have been invaluable.

Improving standards within the sports turf industry has been one of Pitchcare’s main aims since the outset, and education and training are key to furthering that aim. However, our experience has shown that many people do not know what training they need and, even if they do, they have difficulty finding a course that meets their needs or is convenient to them. Now, with our extensive database we are able to overcome those difficulties. We can bring individuals together on tailor-made courses or organise in-house or off-site courses for businesses, schools or clubs.

If you know your requirements, and even if you don’t, just get in touch and we will help you out. Looking forward, as well as continuing to arrange short courses on the safe use of equipment, tools, pesticides etc., we are planning a range of Pitchcare courses specially designed for our members and delivered by our associate instructors. These will include:

ESSENTIAL MANAGEMENT SKILLS

A repeat of our successful 2-day course, delivered by trainer and careers counsellor Frank Newberry who has

trained Groundsmen and Greenkeepers for more than 15 years. We are aware that many of our members have risen to management positions with no formal management training and this course is aimed at helping head, and deputy head, groundsmen and greenkeepers to acquire a range of vital management skills and to put them into practice effectively.

ONE-DAY GENERAL SPORTSTURF MAINTENANCE FOR WINTER OR SUMMER SPORTS

Designed to provide a basic knowledge of grounds preparation and maintenance for playing surfaces. This course is of equal benefit to those who work alone on a sports ground, including volunteers and part time grounds people, or members of groundstaff teams.

Further details of both these courses can be found elsewhere in this supplement.

For details of courses coming up in the near future, go to the “Booking Now” section.

In addition, we are currently developing courses on Health and Safety for Groundstaff and Greenkeepers, and Mechanics for Groundstaff and Greenkeepers, and hope to be able to offer these next winter. As well as supporting our members who are established in their careers, we are keen to encourage young people who are considering joining the turfcare industry. In the past I think it’s true to say that a job as a Groundsman or Greenkeeper has often been seen as just that – a job. However, for those who wish to progress, there is a definite career path available, so in this supplement I’m including information about the higher education qualifications offered by the land-based colleges on both a full- and part-time basis. Whatever your training requirements, we’ll do our best to meet them – with a little help from our friends, of course! So don’t hesitate to get in touch – I look forward to hearing from you.
