Chemical weed treatments only temporarily solve the problem of visible weeds, while their decay aggravates the long-term problem by adding even more organic waste. Aeration supports organisms that digest this organic waste into substances that benefit the pond ecosystem.
The aerators can be fitted to either an existing irrigation system, or via a stand alone pump unit, which delivers pressurised water and air through interconnecting pipes creating large volumes of air bubbles. These bubbles rise bringing the oxygenated bottom water to the surface. Resultant surface water movement also picks up more oxygen, further aiding the aeration process.
The diffusers are especially designed to produce mixed water and oxygen plumes that circulate to the surface. The diffusers are placed on the bottom of the pond (preferably in the deepest water), multiple aerators will be required depending upon the need of
the particular body of water. In normal conditions one diffusion aerator is needed for up to 400 square metres of water.
The results from this system ensure minimal dead bottom water. More oxygen is injected into the water in the most economical way. The mixture of water and oxygen flows from the bottom to the top and circulates outwards in a continuous circuit when the aeration system is fully operational. This effectively breaks up stratification, and ensures the entire water feature is more supportive of fish and the organisms they feed on.
In a fishing lake environment the fishing improves dramatically as fish are more active, even in the warmest weather, and they have an increased natural food supply. Areas of a pond or lake that have been restricted to aquatic life due to low oxygen will be rejuvenated - weed and algae will diminish as the organic material that they feed on is reduced.
Fountain type aerators may look impressive, but the long term operational cost can be significant with an increased level of maintenance. It should be noted that they can also present the hazard of an electrical source within the water.
The Kristal Klear aerator was designed by a Golf Course Manager from ‘down under’ and has been successfully piloted in Australia.
In the UK the system has been employed at three major golf courses - Queenwood in Surrey, Canford Magna in Dorset and the most recent premier Golf Club in Dorset - Remedy Oak - all with major success.
