fit new rings to the piston. Fit the crank into crankcase. Oil parts as you fit them. Next, fit the piston and conrod assembly. Stagger the ring gaps around the piston. Use a ring clamp to compress the rings then, with a hammer handle, tap the piston into the bore. Align the connecting rod to the crank and fit the bearing cap to the connecting rod.

to 10 thou. If the gap is too wide grind a small amount off the valve or seat. If the gap is too small grind a small amount off the valve stem end. When the gap is right clean the valve and seat.

Fit the valve springs and retainers, fit valve cover and cylinder head. Fit flywheel and check the air gap between the outside of the flywheel and the coil. To do this use card or stiff paper approximately 20 thou thick.

Check that the carburettor is clean, remove the bowl, clean the main jet and refit the bowl. Fit the carburettor to the engine and make sure the governor spring and link is fitted correctly.

Fit the blower housing, check and clean the recoil starter and fit a new starter rope if required.

Fit the silencer and petrol tank, bolt the engine on to a bench or the machine. Fill the engine with oil and petrol. Run the engine to working temperature. Adjust the governor to top speed of 2,800 to 3000 RPM.

Fit the cam followers and align the timing marks on the crank and cam gear, then fit the camshaft. Check that the governor spool is okay and fit carefully. Fit the side cover, making sure the governor arm is free and locates to the governor spool. As you do this turn the crankshaft over to engage the governor.

Fit the valves into their guides then, with a feeler gauge, check the valve clearance. The inlet valve should be 6 to 7 thou and the exhaust valve 8

Before fitting the engine drive pulley check that the ‘V’ of the pulley is not worn on the sides. When adjusting the ‘V’ belt to the front drive shaft be careful not to over tighten as this will put undue stress on the camshaft bearings and could cause damage to the engine.

In summary, check the engine oil level regularly. Change the oil regularly. Keep the air filter clean and blow out dirt and chaff from the engine cowlings so that the engine does not over heat. And, all will be well!
