EDWIN ROBERTS’ company, Classic Mowers, has been in existence since 1999 specialising in maintaining older pedestrian mowers and sports ground equipment. In this issue he looks at the Kubota GS200 Side Valve Engine.
This time I would like to look at a Kubota GS200 side valve engine with 2 to 1 reduction gear. This particular example is approximately 15 years old and fitted to a Sisis Mk 4 scarifier. It has started losing oil. Engines used on scarifying machines will wear due to working in dirty and harsh conditions.
Begin by stripping the engine and cleaning all the parts. Check the parts for wear and decide which ones require replacing.
Let me first describe the engine construction. The crankcase is cast aluminium with a cast iron cylinder sleeve, aluminium piston and conrod. The crankshaft is suspended between two ball bearings, the camshaft runs between a plain bearing in the crankcase and a ball bearing in the side cover.

It has a mechanical flyweight governor, arm, spring and link to the carburettor. It has a bowl carburettor with a fixed jet. The air to the carburettor is filtered through a paper filter and thin pre filter made of foam. Ignition is flywheel, solid-state ignition system.
The drive is taken off the camshaft, giving a two to one reduction, counter clockwise drive. The photos show the engine stripped and cleaned ready for rebuild

When checking the piston and rings any wear above the top ring is due to dirt coming through the air filter. Wear below the rings is through dirty oil. Ring wear can be measured by fitting a ring into the bore and using feeler gauges in the ring gap. Do this in three places and this will also give you a good indication
the bore. If there is not sufficient gap hold the ring in a vice and, with a fine flat file, take about 5 cuts across the ring and check back into the bore. Do this until the correct gap is found.
Clean valve and stem and reface the valve if required. Check the valve seat and reface if required. Lap in the valve and clean all traces of lapping paste.
To assemble the engine, first
of bore wear. This usually shows at the top of the bore and on the thrust side. As a rule of thumb 3 thou per inch of bore is required, so 12 to 15 thou of an inch would be acceptable on this type of engine. I have found anything up to 70 thou!
If the bore is not worn too far a new set of standard rings will greatly improve the engine. It is a good thing to check each of the new rings in
