Who are you? Pamela Sherratt, Sports Turf Specialist at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.

Lives READERS

What’s your background? I left school in 1985 and had the humble beginnings as a YTS trainee in Horticulture. Hard to believe I survived on £26 a week! I went on to do my NCH & NDH and immediately got a job as a horticulture instructor at Myerscough. I switched to turf & worked with my mentors, Martyn Jones & Dave Rhodes, until I moved here in 1999. Education wise, I got my BSc. Hort. from University of Central Lancashire and MSc. in Turf from Ohio State. I’m currently doing my PhD.

Status? Married to Craig for 10 years. We have a 7 month old son, Jack.

Maintenance for Synthetic Surfaces? Problem solved.

What do you get up to on your days off? House DIY & gardening, watching sports, hiking, taking my son swimming, I’m an avid reader & we still tend to socialise a bit too much.

What car do you drive? Ford Escape. I didn’t want to be a 4x4 driver but we have snow and ice for 5 months of the year and I’m too scared to drive anything smaller. I did have a Mini Cooper but sold it after my first winter. I don’t care if it does have 6 air bags!

Favourite film? Changes all the time but I just saw Casino Royale. I thought he was the best Bond - even better than Sean Connery. I love all kinds of movies but it’s hard to get my husband to watch a drama or love stories so we usually watch action or thriller stuff. He likes it when people get shot basically.

Favourite radio programme? Chris Moyles - I have Sirius satellite radio so can listed to Radio 1.

Favourite music? English Indie/pop. Most recent buy though was Ray Lamontagna’s new album. Excellent.

What do you most enjoy about your job? It’s something different every day and I manage my own time. I can visit a football pitch one day, do web development another. I get to travel a lot too, talking at conferences and scientific meetings. I’ve done 25 states so far. I love sports so being able to work in sports turf

EACH issue we catch up with a leading turfgrass professional and ask him or her what’s going on in ...

research, teaching and extension is just perfect for me.

Favourite Sport? I love watching the England football team and I try to keep up with Everton FC’s progress. The team came over here to play Columbus Crew this summer and I got my picture taken with James Beattie and David Moyes. I’m always interested to see the results from cricket or tennis but I’m not an avid follower. I also love boxing and hope that Ricky Hatton does well here. Over here, I LOVE college football and go to every game. Never thought I’d say that about American football but it’s my favourite sport. It’s so strategic, like a military operation. Each university in the USA has an American football team - here at Ohio State they are called the ‘Buckeyes’ (a buckeye is a conker. The conker tree is the official state tree). College football in the UK would be lame but here it’s huge. The stadium has a capacity of 105,000 and tickets are like gold dust. The whole city of Columbus is crazy about the Buckeyes.

Favourite Food? I’m not a fussy eater at all. I’m trying to steer clear of fast-food though as I don’t want my son Jack turning into a fat kid that lives off burgers. I go to the state fair each year and I see toddlers walking round with twinkies (hotdog on a stick) and pop, and it makes me cringe. I’m guilty of drinking too much and eating pizza and all that stuff, so I’ve got to clean up my act before Jack catches on!

Pet Hate? Negative attitudes towards America. One man does not make a nation. Americans are warm, funny and wonderful people. They are bad drivers though...
