Lashings of good fortune for Clare

RECENTLY retired England Ladies cricket captain, Clare Connor, has become the first woman to play for the All Star Lashings team.

Lashings, whose players include Richie Richardson, Chris Cairns, Jimmy Adams, Courtney Walsh, Jonty Rhodes and Aravinda Da Silva, play crowd drawing exhibition games against club sides in the UK to help raise funds for the clubs. Clare, who retired after leading her team to an Ashes win said that she was about to return to teaching when she got the call from Lashings Chairman, David Folb, to join the team. “When you see international stars running onto the pitch, the last thing you expect to see is a woman running alongside them” said Clare. “But if the attention in turn leads to raising greater awareness about women’s cricket, and to conversations where I can discuss opportunities for girls within the game, then fantastic, David Folb has been visionary for the profile of the women’s game.”

“ I now have the incredible chance to play alongside some of international cricket’s greats.” “So far, I have taken a couple of

wickets at each match. The predictable banter of ‘getting out to a girl’ as the outgoing batsman trudges back to the pavilion, head-down, has made me chuckle.”

“It’s going to be the most wonderful summer and I thank David for the opportunity.” “As for the changing rooms... I will leave that to your imaginations. But let’s just say, it’s fun playing with the boys!” www.lashings.co.uk to find out where Lashings XI are playing this summer.

DON’T suffer this on my home course in North Dorset. We get the occasional deer running across the fairway, a badger rooting around at dusk, and buzzards circling around overhead (no references to my game being dead please!).

These three fellah’s were walking up to their balls on a course in North America when a fully grown male grizzly bear thundered out of the rough straight towards them. Not surprisingly, they hot-footed away from the rampaging animal. It’s not recorded whether they returned to their balls but my guess is that they headed straight for the 19th hole for a few shots of bourbon!

Another bumper month ...

IT’S been another bumper month in Loz’s brain with his furious fingers getting ahead of the thought process - on too many occasions for our liking. But, once again, we can’t keep these gems to ourselves so here, as we affectionately call them, are the latest batch of Laurencisms. Eat your heart out David Coleman.

“ We are now faced with bright sunny drying winds.

Many groundsmen will be hopping for some warmer sunnier weather.

I’ve got 25 baseball caps, one for every day of the week.

Also adder snakes are in abundance.

Using an Hand help granular applicator.

I think we could catch a large mackerel if we play our cards right.
