artificial surface is quoted to be between ten and fifteen years; although there are no examples of third generation ones getting close to this age as yet. It is essential that maintenance practitioners follow the exact maintenance guidelines supplied with their specific artificial surface (if such recommendations exist). It also important to keep in regular communication with suppliers as their recommendations have been known to change, frequently. In doing so, the warranty of the surface in question remains valid.
Conclusions
The maintenance of third generation artificial football pitches is a key factor related to their surface playability characteristics and effective working lifetimes. They are not maintenance free and although they are capable of taking high amounts of play, their resistance to its negative effects are on a diminishing sliding scale. Without the ability to physically recover from surface wear, it is important to understand that the aim of maintenance then focuses solely on preservation rather than recuperation; as opposed to natural turf.

Days OFF! ... or what Pitchcare readers get up to out of office hours
GORDON MCKILLOP was appointed CEO of the Sports Turf Research Institute (STRI) in 2000 and for the last six years has been working hard to promote the services of his organisation whilst at the same time promoting the sports turf industry. He began his career in ADAS as an advisory entomologist and then moved on to undertake research into wildlife behaviour, ecology and management, ultimately as part of the Central Science Laboratory (CSL) at York. He has a PhD from Reading University in applied zoology and, more recently, obtained a Masters degree in Business Administration (MBA) from Henley Management College. His days off are spent relaxing at home or with his children, however it invariably involves playing or watching sport. Gordon is a keen golfer who doesn’t worry about his handicap score these days as long as he keeps beating his son Douglas (which is now relatively infrequently). He also plays table tennis and represented Glasgow schools at badminton in the distant past, although more recently he won a veterans’ tournaments in Harrogate. He plays these sports against both of his sons (Neil and Douglas) and again all that really matters is that he beats them (which is still frequent). As for watching sport he regularly watches Leeds Tykes, the rugby union side that unfortunately this year got relegated, with a group of friends and colleagues from work. However, to keep things in balance, Gordon also manages to find time to go
shopping with his teenage daughter Kirsty that, surprisingly, he finds quite relaxing!
