Pitchcare duo showcase gardens for charity
TWO members of the Pitchcare team had a frantic start to the month of June preparing to welcome visitors to their workplaces as part of the National Gardens Scheme. The scheme has been opening fine gardens to the public to raise money for charity for more than 75 years. From large estates to small cottage gardens, the events raise a substantial amount of money for good causes. For the fourth year running, visitors were given a rare opportunity to take a guided tour of the grounds at the famous Hurlingham Club in Fulham, West London. Highlights of the tour included a river walk,
preparing the grounds for our visitors to enjoy. We’re very proud of our work here and it’s nice for us to be able to show the gardens off to an audience which wouldn’t normally see them. Later the same week, former Harlequins Head Groundsman, Chris Parry, welcomed visitors to the private estate of publisher Felix Dennis in the chocolate-box village of Dorsington, Warwickshire. Several properties in the village took part on a glorious summer’s day. Chris and two other staff maintain approximately ten acres of garden which include croquet lawns, formal gardens, a Japanese garden, a bronze sculpture ‘Avenue of Heroes’, a maze and a sunken water garden as well as an arboretum containing several hundred trees from around the world. During the spring, he
shrubberies, herbaceous borders and formal bedding as well as the immaculate croquet lawns, grass tennis courts and bowling greens. Grounds Manager Peter Craig said it had been a busy time for his team: “There has been a lot of extra work for the gardening staff but the event raises money for charity and we enjoy
returfed a substantial part of the lawns on the estate using turf supplied by Fineturf. “I sometimes miss the buzz of a matchday and seeing my pitch looking good on Sky TV, but my new job has its own rewards. It’s been nice to talk to interested members of the public about my work and all the staff received compliments on the appearance of the gardens. On top of that, the village raised more than £11,000 for charity, which is a fantastic achievement.” Following the open day, Chris will lift the remaining 4,000sqm of turf with a Koro to begin installing a fully automated irrigation system.
