by Chris White It was another successful sports season this spring for the Salem
High Blue Devils. Led by the Class L champion softball team capturing its first title since 2007, a number of Salem teams and individuals came through with top-notch performances during the post-season. In addition to softball, the baseball team advanced to its
Class L final in Manchester on the same day, but had to settle for the runner-up spot. Both tennis teams also produced solid seasons, ending up in the quarterfinals after losing top talent to graduation and the

by Robyn Hatch Salem’s North School ended the year with a creative bang. A large group of fifth graders sold pencils for 10 cents apiece and collected over $250 dollars. They then bought pillowcases and decorated each one differently, then filled each one with inexpensive toys to give to Foster Care. The Dept. of Health Services picked up the 25 bags and promised to give them to needy children. The fifth graders also worked very hard on designing and
working on poetry books to share with their parents. The teachers had given the students guidelines on writing their works of art, and then they were turned loose to be creative. The students could choose from 10 poetry choices to work on: your name; your favorite thing; a specific color; words in a shape; a made-up creature; or what you taste, smell, hear, and touch. Each student produced a unique book and had the opportunity to read from their book in front of their parents, but this wasn’t mandatory.
