Relay For Life Brings the Salem Community Together to Fight Cancer
by Robyn Hatch
Salem residents held their Relay For Life to raise funds to defeat cancer this past weekend, all of which benefit cancer research for The American Cancer Society. Relay For Life is a community event to celebrate, remember, and fight back against cancer. Teams try to keep at least one member circling the track for 18 hours. When not walking the track, the participants enjoyed food, music, and games, while camping out overnight.
This year’s Relay took place on a very hot day at Salem High School to a packed crowd of 800 members of the community representing all walks of life. Over 82 Relay For Life teams registered to date, and 135 local cancer survivors will be recognized and honored. The community expects to raise $200,000 during this year’s Relay,
which will put them at raising over $1,000,000 as a community since the first Relay For Life of Salem six years ago.
