submitted by Mike Wallace The summer season may have just begun, but the 10U Hurricanes girls’ softball team is already in


full swing. The 10U Hurricanes, a premier travel softball team based out of Play Ball in Salem, have a 25-3-1 record to date, have won four of the five tournaments that they’ve entered, and have qualified to participate in the 2010 Pony 10U National Softball Tournament in Wilmington, DE, the week of July 5.


Comprised of girls from New Hampshire and Massachusetts, the Hurricanes won the ASA Boston Championship Tournament in North Reading, MA, on June 20. They also won the Maine Diamond Challenge Tournament in Old Orchard Beach, ME, on June 13; the Robert Charpentier Tournament in Lowell, MA, on June 6; and the Mass Destruction Mayhem Tournament in Burlington, MA, on May 16. The team also came in second at the Eliminators Mother’s Day Tournament in Middletown, CT, on May 9. The girls have relied on great pitching, solid hitting, and strong defensive play to beat teams from New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, Rhode Island, and New York. They will play in the New Hampshire ASA States tournament in Manchester prior to playing in the National Tournament. Players on the 10U Hurricanes include Victoria Andrade (Salem), Hailey Cockroft, Lindsey DuMond, Jordan Hillyer (Windham), Kellie Kennedy (Hudson), Abigail Latham (Salem), Brianna Marino (Salem), Brooke Murphy (Salem), Madison Rastello (Salem), Nicole Teague (Hudson), Alyssa Upton (Windham), and Niamh Walker (Salem). The team is coached by Eric Marino and Pam Walker of Salem and Erin Upton of Windham. The Northeast Hurricane Girls Softball Program was established to develop young athletes as both players and responsible young people. Becker Wins New Hampshire State Singles Title


by Chris White Philipp Becker became Salem’s first tennis player ever to win the New Hampshire state singles tournament last week. He defeated Londonderry’s Alex Burbine (7-5, 6-3) on Friday, June 18, in Manchester to collect his second state title of the school year. Back in the fall, he was a member of the Blue Devils’ Division 1 championship football team. Earlier in the week, Becker breezed through rounds one,


two, and three; not losing a set to any of his opponents. Becker then defeated his opponent from Bedford in the semifinals to advance to the final round and take the title. For the whole tournament, Becker played as the number-one seed in a field of 32.


Becker’s victory will go down as one of Salem’s greatest feats this season, but unfortunately for the Blue Devils, Becker is an exchange student from Germany who will be returning home soon.

Salem Cardinals Win Four of First Five


by Chris White The Salem Cardinals (4-1) of the Southern Senior Babe Ruth League kicked off the summer last week with one win apiece over Hollis-Brookline and the Nashua Chiefs, and two against Keene. So far, their only loss came to the Nashua Mavericks last Saturday night at Holman Stadium. On Sunday at Michele Park, the Cardinals took both games of a doubleheader by scores of 5-3 and 12-1.


Keene led 2-1 at the end of the fourth inning in the first game, but Salem plated two runs in the fifth, plus two in the sixth to secure the victory. Keene got one more run in the sixth, but it would not make a difference. Salem pitcher Jake Ratka threw six innings to get the win, and Pat Carroll came on in relief in the seventh inning to shut the door for the save. Offensively, the Cardinals were led by Jon McQuarrie, who went 1-3 and drove home two runs. Meanwhile, Joe Lemenager went 1-2 with an RBI and a run scored, and Dan Peters went 1-1 with an RBI and a run as well. The Cardinals jumped out to an early lead in the second contest, highlighted by a five-run second inning.


Paul Trabucco went the distance to pick up the win for Salem, allowing only one run on three hits. Trevor Bouvier led Salem offensively, going 2-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Peters, Matthew Barbin, and Jose Ortiz each went 1-2 at the plate and knocked in two runs.
