FRIDAY 30 49 Giraffes Live Lounge,

live review

FLORENCE AND THE MACHINE Cooper’s Field, Cardiff. Thurs 10 June words BEN BRYANT photos OWEN RICHARDS

Has anybody noticed just how bellowy Florence is live? Stomping around the stage, drumstick in hand, she launches into everything she sings with the full force of her diaphragm, hitting notes on the nose then deliberately fading fl at, retching out the occasional ear-splitting scream. At Reading last year, that punky spirit was much more welcome, especially as it was exuded by an artist who was, astonishingly, prepared to scale the rigging and swing from the heavens with one arm. Tonight, she can keep her thundering yowl. It’s clear that she still doesn’t possess the self-control to rein in her voice when she needs to, a case in point being the fact that she still – still – just can’t hit the notes on her best song to date, Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up). Thundering yowl aside, her set tonight is a decent showcase of the album that propelled her to fame in the space of a couple of years. And it is a good album. Florence is still by far the most credible of the current crop of British female artists, with a lot of solid pop songs and a fi rmly established fan base. The one new song she plays, Strangeness And Charm, shows promise, and it’s clear that she won’t be fading away anytime soon. So she doesn’t need to shout anymore. She has our attention. A more subtle, nuanced second album might yet endear her to a wider audience.
