WHETHER they’re the cornerstone of your exis- tence or the cause of your darkest nightmares there’s no escaping from the fact that, like death and taxes, families are inevitable; which is probably why some- one once described them as “the friends chosen for you at birth”. However they’re viewed, one thing that can’t be denied is that family relationships and the bonds between family members are like no other. For those families that make music together those bonds become almost supernatural; just consider the legacy of pop greats such as The Jacksons, The Car- penters, The Everlys, The Isleys and The Osmonds and it’s clear that something special happens when brothers, sisters, mothers and fathers get together, and it’s not just pop music that has the monopoly. Folk and roots music has its fair share, from the ex- tended North American McGarrigle/Wainwright clan to the venerable Copper Family from Sussex and, from Hull in Yorkshire, the legendary Watersons. Having released their first album in 1965, siblings Norma, Mike and Lal Waterson, together with their cousin John Harrison, were one of the most impor- tant groups of the folk revival; although the line-up has changed through the intervening years (Harri- son being replaced by Norma’s husband Martin Car- thy and Lal sadly dying in 1998), their reputation re- mains intact, thanks to numerous side projects such as Waterson:Carthy. Almost half a century on from their formation, The Watersons are still the benchmark by which much of the British tradition is measured and that situation shows no signs of changing any time soon. Recently they have begun performing as The Waterson Fam- ily with an extended line up consisting of Mike and Norma Waterson, Martin and Eliza Carthy, Mike’s wife Ann and daughters Rachel and Eleanor to- gether with Oliver Knight and Maria Gilhooley, the son and daughter of the much missed Lal Waterson. Getting all the family members together in one place is a logistical nightmare so gigs are few and far be- tween but fortunately for South Wales based folk fans one of the places that they will be appearing at is Cardiff’s St David’s Hall where, on Tue 20 July, they’ll be performing as part of the Welsh Proms. It’s a rare opportunity that shouldn’t be missed.
