Spring Green your plans
SOUTH West energy efficiency and sustainability specialists Carbon.gc are advising developers, architects and builders to ‘Spring Green’ their plans to beat new legislation. On April 1, the law was changed, meaning that all new buildings will need to reduce CO2 emissions by 25 per cent to meet stringent additional rules which will be brought in to force from October. These changes to Part L of the Building Regulations are the most drastic changes seen to the legislation to date.
The new legislation will put the onus on design teams, architects and builders of new residential buildings - from large to small developments - to work out new solutions to ensure they comply and their buildings can be signed off by building control.

James Blackburn, director of Carbon.gc, said: ‘Whilst building specification might currently comply, from October this will no longer be the case and builders who don’t meet the grade will not be able to get the documentation required to make their building comply. ‘When energy efficiency measures are incorporated at design stage, it has a significant effect on reducing construction costs.
‘There are inevitable cost implications to developers due to these new targets, so ensuring these are minimised is where we add significant value and our expertise is essential.
‘This is why we are encouraging designers and developers to have a Spring Green early on to make sure they are well prepared for the October deadline.’
