FOR over 50 years the Lighthouse Club has been offering a welcome light to construction industry workers and their families when, for one reason or another, their world goes dark.
The club was founded on
values of consideration for others, compassion and
camaraderie, and members aim to have a good time whilst raising money to help workers and their families when through accident or illness they find themselves in need of financial help, whether they are members of the club or not. Today the club has branches around the UK and across the
world. Money is raised through membership subscription, national and branch events, corporate sponsorship and the goodwill of individuals who go to great lengths for a cause they believe in - running marathons, cycling from John o’Groats to Land's End and taking part in the Three Peaks Challenge being just a few in recent months. By the end of 2010, the Lighthouse Club Benevolent Fund will have given away £10m since its foundation. One of the branches is in the

South West and regional welfare officer Susanne Furse was called upon to help a family who had tragically lost their 16-year-old son in an accident. She said: ‘The devastation of losing such a young person is something most of us will hopefully never have to face. The Lighthouse Club was able to support the family with financial assistance for funeral expenses to at least relieve that burden. ‘The young man had been
employed by a local company and the managing director has
been a staunch Lighthouse Club supporter for many years. He said that although he had always been aware of the excellent work done, until you are touched personally by the Lighthouse Club you can never truly appreciate what it means to the families who are helped.’ Dave Kelly, the grandfather of the teenager, agreed: ‘The help and comfort given to my family was truly appreciated. ‘We genuinely believe that the
work done by the Lighthouse Club is invaluable.’
Susanne Furse continued: ‘The Lighthouse Club's latest fundraising event was a Ladies Night Dinner & Dance at the Langstone Cliff Hotel in Dawlish. Over 150 guests attended as construction companies in the area (many who work in competition with each other during the day) joined together for a fabulous night of entertainment including an Abba tribute band.
